JOB OPPORTUNITY:
Full-time Staff Attorney Position
ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri seeks applicants for a full-time staff attorney to work in our office in Kansas City, Missouri. The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri is an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union. For information about the work of the ACLU, visit www.aclukswmo.org and www.aclu.org.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate with ACLU staff and ACLU volunteer attorneys in pending ACLU litigation, including all aspects of discovery, motion practice, evidentiary hearings, and drafting briefs in trial and appellate courts
  • Conduct civil liberties litigation in federal and state court
  • Research and present selected potential cases to the ACLU Legal Panel for evaluation
  • Draft legal memoranda, demand letters, and advocacy letters
  • Review requests for legal assistance and supervise legal intake to ensure that requests for assistance are properly evaluated and processed
  • Work with the Executive Director and staff on legislative issues
  • Develop and participate in community education and outreach programs
  • Participate in programs developed by ACLU staff and volunteers
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Qualifications:

  • A strong and demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and civil rights, and support for the goals of the American Civil Liberties Union 
  • Ability to litigate independently and under pressure, with a strong and demonstrated commitment to professionalism and high ethical standards
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Skills as an articulate public advocate
  • Ability to develop and implement non-litigation strategies
  • Ability to work cooperatively on a variety of projects with lawyers, other staff members, volunteers and with allied community organizations and coalitions
  • J.D. with at least 3 years of litigation experience
  • Must be a member of either the Missouri or Kansas bar, preferably both
  • Willingness to work beyond the normal work day, including evening and weekend meetings and events
