About the ACLUback to topThe ACLU of Kansas & Western Missouri is a non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 1961 by legal, civic and philanthropic leaders to protect and defend the Constitutional rights and civil liberties of every individual regardless of creed, race, religion or other labeling through education, advocacy and litigation. Nationally, the ACLU is the only organization dedicated to promoting and protecting constitutional rights. Locally, our goal is to protect and put the Bill of Rights to everyday use for all people living in Kansas and Western Missouri. We also work to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including women; Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people; mental health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor. The ACLU maintains that civil liberties must be respected even in times of national emergency. The ACLU is supported by annual dues and contributions from its members, grants from private foundations and individuals. We do not receive any government funding.
