LGBT Rights

Through litigation, legal advocacy, and public education, the ACLU fights against the discriminatory treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in Kansas and Western Missouri. The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri maintains that the U.S. Constitution requires that our laws apply equally, regardless of one’s sexual orientation or gender identity; that we have a right to privacy in our personal relationships; and that we have the First Amendment right to communicate gay-positive viewpoints, to choose how we express our gender identity, and to associate with whomever we wish. Unfortunately, courts have not yet fully acknowledged these rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.

The ACLU LGBT Taskforce fights discrimination and moves public opinion through legislative advocacy and public education across five issue areas: Relationships, Schools and Youth, Parenting, Gender Identity and Expression, and Discrimination in Employment, Housing and other areas. The LGBT Taskforce welcomes all concerned ACLU members, interested community members, including straight allies, and representatives from business, government and all faith communities.
