Immigrants' Rights

The Constitution guarantees the fundamental rights and civil liberties of every person in this country. Upholding the rights of the politically disenfranchised is vital; when the government has the power to deny legal rights and due process to one group of people, it puts all our rights in danger.

The ACLU has been one of the nation's leading advocates for the rights of immigrants, refugees and non-citizens, challenging unconstitutional laws and practices, countering the myths upon which many of these laws are based. The fundamental constitutional protections of due process and equal protection embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every "person" and are not limited to citizens. Upholding the rights of the politically disenfranchised is vital; when the government has the power to deny legal rights and due process to one group of people, it puts all our rights in danger.  In order to promote these rights, the ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri established the Immigrants' Rights Project (IRP). The IRP is dedicated to expanding and enforcing the civil liberties and civil rights of non-citizens and to combating public and private discrimination against immigrants.

ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project (IRP)

The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri is providing outreach and public education services to immigrant communities, as well as to the general public about issues affecting the immigrant population. Through “Know Your Rights” presentations and community canvasses, we inform immigrant groups and individuals about their constitutional rights. We also provide education and information to the general public to dispel myths about immigration and to promote understanding of those constitutional rights which extend to all who reside within the United States. We also will protect those rights by investigating reports of abuse and responding to them with redress or resolution.  For more information or to join the IRP, click here.
