Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights and is guaranteed to all Americans. Since 1920, the ACLU has worked to preserve our freedom of speech. Learn more and take action to protect the right to free speech. Locally, the ACLU has been working on these issues since 1961.

The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri has been instrumental in making sure Freedom of Speech is a liberty enjoyed by all for the past 50 years. We have dealt with everything from the loyalty oaths that took the nation by storm in the 60's, war protests in the 70's, censorship in the 80's, banned books in the 90's and standing up to police in the 00's. The ACLU's longstanding commitment to civil liberties is unwavering.
