The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri receives thousands of requests annually for assistance. To be accepted, your case must be a violation of individual rights by the government. There is never a fee charged to clients whose cases we accept.

Volunteer attorneys handle ACLU cases and ACLU members fund court fees and other related expenses. We do NOT have an attorney on staff.

Who We Can Help

The ACLU is an advocacy organization dedicated to the defense of individual rights. ACLU protects the rights given every citizen within the Bill of Rights such as:

  • Freedom of speech
  • Freedom of assembly
  • Freedom against unfair search and seizure
  • Freedom from cruel and unusual punishment
  • Equal protection under the law
  • Right to privacy
  • Freedom of religion

If you feel one of these rights has been violated, the next question to ask is whether or not the violation was performed by the government (school, police, etc).

The ACLU handles only cases involving government infringement on your rights. If the violation was performed by a private company/agency, the ACLU would not be able to accept the case. There are other organizations that handle cases of individual rights abuses involving non-government entities. (Please see below for referral information.)
